The Directors

Please note that the Young Vic Directors Program is open to all directors at an early stage of their career. The only criteria for joining is that they consider themselves professional directors, are not in full time education and are resident in the UK. It is important that when using this list detailed references are taken up as presence on this list is not in itself a recommendation.

    Rachel Grunwald - Photo
background: I recently directed 'Blood and Gifts' by JT Rogers and 'No Such Cold Thing' by Naomi Wallace as part of 'The Great Game: Afghanistan', a history cycle of new plays about Afghanistan at the Tricycle Theatre, London. I also assisted Nicolas Kent and Indhu Rubasingham on several other new plays in the cycle.

I'm interested in exploring ways to collapse the distance between the actor and the audience, working from the starting point that the one thing we all truly share is the space we're in.
I have loved playing with how dramas unfold around a (moving) audience in site-specific productions and non-theatrical spaces.
I'm also interested in developing music/musical theatre.

New writing over the past two years includes:
'Potency' by Michael J Flexer in a squash court at the Edinburgh Fringe 2008, 'The Garden' by Helena Thompson in Little Wormwood Scrubs Park 2008, 'The Accidental Proteus' by Michael J Flexer, for Company of Angels at Soho Theatre 2008, 'Superhuman' by Helena Thompson in Kensal House Council Estate 2008, and 'Weightless' by Sarah Cuddon for the HighTide Festival 2007.

I have also taught and directed at drama schools in London, and lectured international adult groups at The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

background: I have recently graduated with a First in Drama and English from the University of East Anglia. The course had a strong focus on practical learning and I have a broad spectrum of theatre skills. I've worked in different roles on curricular and student company shows, from design to stage managing to directing. I directed The Vagina Monologues as part of a V-Day Campaign raising money or charity, in which I organised various events, fund-raisers and awareness workshops in addition to directing the play and being in charge of design, production and finance. I also directed a piece of new writing and successfully took it to the Edinburgh Fringe. The Spinks Award for exceptional contribution to drama was awarded to me for my academic and directing work in the first year. I've been involved in greek tragedy, shakespeare, modern classics, new writing, youth projects, musicals, charity work and campaigning. background: I studied and trained at the University of Kent on the four year Drama and Theatre Studies course, receiving my Masters degree in Theatre Directing. The course gives equal weighting to both practical and theoretical studies and in the first three years gives students grounding in all genres and styles of theatre and performance, whilst the final year is a dedicated pre-professional training year in a specific field. During my time at Kent I was also lucky enough to travel to the Moscow Arts Theatre School where I studied on an intensive actor training programme. Since graduating in 2008, I have directed for West Sussex County Youth Theatre, and have also been appointed an associate director/actor to the Shakespearean clowning troupe The Pantaloons. Recently, I have co-founded the contemporary theatre company Brendans Boat, working on a production of Adam Rapps Nocturne in Brighton and re-staging my award winning production of 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane at the Hull Truck Theatre this coming March.

I am a hard-working, inventive and enthusiastic person with a passion for creating and developing theatre and I am fascinated equally, by new writing and classical texts. As a director, I try to study a diverse range of directorial approaches and performance techniques, first and foremost to serve the work but also to develop my understanding of theatre making as a whole.
