Please note that the Young Vic Directors Program is open to all directors at an early stage of their career. The only criteria for joining is that they consider themselves professional directors, are not in full time education and are resident in the UK. It is important that when using this list detailed references are taken up as presence on this list is not in itself a recommendation.

background: I founded Waxwing Theatre in 2008, in order to revive little known masterpieces of recent years, and to create compelling and thought provoking devised work. Our work has been influenced by a number of practitioners and companies- particularly Complicite and Told by an Idiot. We are currently playing with mixing different genres, and bringing high-class text work to predominantly physical pieces.Last logged in 16/8/2010
We began last year with a critically acclaimed revival of Martin Crimp's No One Sees the Video, with a 10 night run at the Rosemary Branch Theatre. In October this year (2009) we completed a 3 week run of Terry Johnson's Imagine Drowning, again at the Rosemary Branch. Our next production, planned for Sept 2010, will be a devised production.
I trained at Central School of Speech and Drama, and also work with young people and communities on devising theatre (in particular with Creative Partnerships.)

background: I am a British/Estonian director who completed the Directing Programme at the National Theatre Studio (London) and Rose Bruford Drama College. As a winner of prestigious Channel 4 Theatre Directors’ Scheme Bursary, I worked at the Royal Court as a Trainee Director (2005 – 2006). This training gave me an invaluable insight into text-based classical theatre. I have also trained internationally, exploring visual and movement based theatre practices at the Ecole Philippe Gaulier, Stephen F. Austin University (USA) and Tartu University (Estonia) as well as in the training methods of Tadashi Suzuki through workshops with Ichiro Nakayama. I have directed thirteen productions in the UK, USA and Estonia.Last logged in 1/9/2010
My work is inspired by the legacy of Vsevolod Meyerhold and I set up The Cabotin Company in 2002 in order to explore some of his working methods in relation to rhythmic, musical and scenic composition. The Cabotin Company's first production, Machinal, premiered at the White Bear Theatre in May 2002. Fiona Mountford from the Evening Standard wrote of this show: 'The pity is, however, that those interested in up-and-coming talent, uneven though it can be at times, have only a few days left to catch such inventiveness.'
I addition to the productions in London, I have also directed projects in Estonia (Vagina Monologues at the Ugala Repertory Theatre, 2003) and USA (A Mouthful of Birds by Caryl Churchill and David Lan; The Dressing Room: That which Flows Away Ultimately Becomes Nostalgia by Shimizu Kunio at the Downstage Theater, Stephen F. Austin University, 2000)
I was in charge of re-creating 60's Happening for the Royal Court Fiftieth Anniversary. Terry Johnson reviewed it as: 'Elina's vision is blindingly bold and might provide just the sort of event that inspires theatre seekers to SEEK MORE THEATRE. I urge you to consider it very seriously.'
additional skills related to directing: Movement, Dramaturgy, Design
experienced in: New writing, Classics, Devising, Performance Art, Physical work, Puppetry, Mask work
other skills related to directing: As a Trainee Director working at the Royal Court, I was fully involved participating in regular YWP script-meetings and writing reports on roughly 100 plays. I enjoyed developing the work of young playwrights through readings and workshops.
other skills: I do regular access work for Graeae, supporting disabled actors. I also work as a relief Mental Health Outreach Worker for Dimensions.

background: I studied at Hull University and trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I began my journey as an actor, working in theatre (touring, physical, musical theatre), for about 8 years. I worked with Howard Barker and the Wrestling School, and Barker invited me to direct his play 'Judith', which kick started my shift into Directing. I quickly realised that I was best placed in this role, and proceeded to set up a company (ProActive Productions) to enable me to explore further. Here I directed 'The Bald Prima Donna' which won an Arts Council East award and toured the South East, and enjoyed a sell out run at the Kings Head.Last logged in 25/7/2010
I then went on to teach and direct at Bath Spa University, where I became Senior Lecturer in Drama and Deputy Artistic Director of Full Tilt Theatre Company. Here I directed over 15 large scale productions, many of which were radical reinventions of classical works, many of which toured to theatres such as the Minack in Cornwall, the Bristol Old Vic and the Theatre Royal Bath.
Over the past 3 years I have started to work in the realms of site specific and promenade theatre, and most recently toured a promenade event theatre production of 'The Comedy of Errors' to USA and Canada.

background: I specialize in promenade and site-specific work and have directed productions in a disused Courtroom, a Medical Operating Centre, and various old factories. I am interested in political work that promotes discussion around contemporary themes, so far these have included monetary supply, law-making, political humiliation and exploitation. I usually work in tight collaboration with artists, performers and musicians and produce theatre that is part-theatre, part-gig, part visual feast, I like the audience to enjoy themselves and have a genuine engagement with the narrative, the space and the experience.Last logged in 12/4/2010
