The Directors

Please note that the Young Vic Directors Program is open to all directors at an early stage of their career. The only criteria for joining is that they consider themselves professional directors, are not in full time education and are resident in the UK. It is important that when using this list detailed references are taken up as presence on this list is not in itself a recommendation.

background: I studied English Literature at university (Kings College, London) before training with Jacques Lecoq in Paris.

On returning to London, I began my career as an actor working with the Clod Ensemble, the Gate, the Lyric Hammersmith, the Young Vic, RNT Studio amongst others. I still work as an actor and the experiences I have working with other directors directly enrich my own practice.

I run Filament Theatre with composer Osnat Schmool which fuses devised physical performance with polyphonic music. We have created three pieces, 'Drive Ride Walk' (which toured for four weeks around London theatre and non-theatre spaces in the spring of 2011), 'One Dark Night', 'One Small Step' and 'One or the Other' which are a trilogy of songs exploring key moments in life and 'Momo'.

'MOMO' is currently touring London. A music theatre adaptation of Michael Ende's children's book for children 7+ and their families, the show is on at Polka Theatre from 12th -22nd March, Stratford Circus 28th and 29th March and at Greenwich Theatre from 1st-5th April.
We are associate artists of Greenwich Theatre.
I am also an associate director of RedCape Theatre for whom I directed 1 Beach Road in 2011.

background: I am the founder and Artistic Director of the bold & saucy theatre company. www.boldandsaucy.co.uk

Over 20 years we have made all kinds of work, classical touring shows, site specific devised shows, live art and new writing. We work out of the fh space which we also hire out to other companies and facilitate workshops. www.fhspace.co.uk

We have three new projects planned for the next four years - a new play at Theatre 503, a devised play based on Caitlin Moran's How to be a woman and a site specific piece. We also have an on-going
International project with Terra Nova company in Northern Ireland exploring environmental change in a new play titled All At Once I Saw A Crowd. We were invited to workshop the play with the National Theatre of Greenland in Nuuk, Greenland in Summer 2013 and we are now fundraising and working on the final draft for a tour in 2015/6.

I also work as a freelance, most recent work devising and directing The Last Post by Kilter theatre company which is currently touring.

I am a permanent member of staff at Central School of Speech & Drama, where I teach acting on the contemporary strand of MA Acting. I also direct public productions and showcases.

    THEATRE

background: I trained at Rose Bruford college on their European Theatre Arts BA (Hons) course and graduated in 2009.

Career highlights for me include securing funding to produce my first live art piece London Wall 1980something, winning the DCMS Creative Bursary which afforded me an incredible six month residency at The Gate Theatre and assisting Toby Frow on Frank McGuiness's 'Crocodile' as part of the Sky Arts Riverside Studios programme.

My passion lies in working callaboratively with artists from all disciplines, as such I find inspiration in the work of poets. film makers, musicians, architects etc. I love playing with the manipulation of space and interrogating the line between performative and pedestrain movement in my work.

I most recently directed a devised response piece to the Revenger's Tragedy at Hoxton Hall, with a young actors company of 10 performers. It comprised the writings of Shakespeare, Rilke and lyrics of The Cure and PJ Harvey with loads of movement thrown in for good measure.

I am part of a collective, The Writers Rave. We work alongside writers to develop their plays and hold events that showcase in the format of a reherased reading. It provides a great platform for their work and is a great networking opportunity.

I'm interested in hearing from artists working in any art form and open to experimenting with any new material and ways of working.

background: I trained at Central School of Speech and Drama as an actor alongside the directing, writing, design and puppetry students. The course was geared towards collaborative Theatre and have found this to be of great value to me. I started writing a few years ago and have had a reading at the Almeida with Ralph Fiennes play the title character and have just had another play published.

I started to direct at the theatre theatre school in Halifax where I sometimes teach and this led to an interest in professional directing. A few productions later and I am associate director with Workswell Productions who are an associate company with The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham. I now wish to expand my skills and knowledge of directing with other styles of work.

background: My area of expertise as a director revolves around surrealism and dreamscape effect in performance. Merging physical theatre and dance as well as naturalism and text to create a total work. I aim for my productions to be a personal experience for the audience and for the reactions and emotions they have endured to be of an intimate nature, rather than a distant sense of catharsis.

I have trained with industry professionals and companies in physical theatre (Tmesis), Stage Combat (Dr Gareth Somers), Comedy, Clowning and Physical Theatre (Dr Daniel Bye), Contemporary dance choreography (Philip Van Huffel, Retina) and the list continues, I have also shadowed the likes of Ramin Gray of the ATC.

I have a wealth of experience in working with young people, with over 1 years experience of teaching within a school (Moulton School Northampton) on top of my 3 years of experience with various youth theatres across the country. I aim for my workshops to be engaging, challenging and fulfilling for the young participants. My workshop facilitation skills vary from physical theatre to creative writing. From movement, choreography and proxemics to character development, emotional memory and structural development.
