The Directors

Please note that the Young Vic Directors Program is open to all directors at an early stage of their career. The only criteria for joining is that they consider themselves professional directors, are not in full time education and are resident in the UK. It is important that when using this list detailed references are taken up as presence on this list is not in itself a recommendation.

  20. Li E Chen*
    Li E Chen - Photo
background: Li E Chen is an interdisciplinary artist (director, performer, digital designer, young curator/producer) working across from experimental theatre, live art, visual art, new media and opera. Li also runs an artist-led company aims to produce cutting edge interdisciplinary art and cross-over collaborations both in the UK and China. Additionally, in 2008/9 she was selected for a creative leadership training programme-StepChange, supported by the National Theatre, Royal Opera House, Young Vic, BAC and Cultural Leadership Programme, and had a three months secondment at Improbable Theatre Company.

Li grew up in mainland China and moved to the UK in 1997. She received a BA in Alternative Theatre Practice from the Central School of Speech and Drama in 2004 and an MA in Media Arts Philosophy and Practice from the University of Greenwich in 2007, (Distinctions awards in both degrees).

Lis artwork aims to create performances that express meaning without reference to traditional forms of story, dialogue and narrative. She considers her approach as conceptual, humorous, risk-taking, non-representational and process-based. Her work aims to move beyond conceptions of representation that are dominant in visual arts and visual culture, and to experiment with movement where "form" or "structure" remains incomplete.

Currently she is experimenting with an approach to visual arts and live performance in a state of being totally objective (standing at a distance) as a new way of bringing audiences to experience art works differently. Her artistic career has been influenced by the works of Edward Bond, Robert Wilson, Harold Pinter, Improbable, Techching Hsieh, Tadeusz Kantor, Robert Lepage, William Forsythe, Pina Bausch and many other theatre, live artists, writers, philosophers, visual artists, choreographers and producers/curators.

  21. Liam Jarvis*
    Liam Jarvis - Photo
background: I am Co-Artistic director of award winning multi-disciplinary company, Analogue, touring work in the UK and Internationally. Our work is highly cross disciplinary, and often borne out of extensive periods of research and development (up to two years) with collaborators working in tangential fields (as diverse as computer games design and histopathology). My company's work to date has included critically acclaimed works such as 'Mile End' (2007) and 'Beachy Head' (2009). We have new projects in development throughout 2010/11. Analogue are Associate Artists at Farnham Maltings.

I have been fortunate enough in my career to assist and work with radical companies and artists such as Gecko, Theatre Rites and Chris Goode, all of whom have contributed to my understanding of what live performance can be.

I've directed diverse work from large-scale shows to work in progress pieces at The Hampstead Theatre, The Young Vic Studio, Drill Hall, LAMDA, Rose Bruford, BAC, CPT, Barons Court Theatre, The Cockpit Theatre, The Space and The Pleasance Islington/Edinburgh.

I am a Visiting Lecturer in Contemporary Theatre Making at Royal Holloway University, where I have recently completed an MRes thesis on hybrid intermedial forms of performance. I have just been offered an AHRC award in 2010 to commence a PhD exploring the ethics of spectatorial interactions in performance since the turn of the Millenium.

As an actor: I trained with NYT and have since performed in various roles in theatres such as The Royal National Theatre, The Young Vic Studio, BAC and Stratford Circus.

****(*) The Public Reviews "There are two things that make going to the theatre a truly delightful experience: firstly the opportunity to see a play that is new (or new to you) which is brilliantly written, and secondly to see it performed by a superb cast. This revival production of J.M Barrie's What Every Woman Knows offers both in abundance, and is also well directed, costumed and staged...A must see production for all those with a love of theatre and robust sense of humour."

    Lucy Barwell - Photo
background: I graduated in July 2005 from Cambridge with a BA (hons) in Drama and English with Education Studies. My main training in directing has come, I feel, through trial and error while directing at university. Directing highlights range from Peter Pan to Pinter. I believe in theatre as an art that can speak to people, not necessarily to preach but to provoke and probe.

After uni I spent a year assistant directing the Richmond Theatre Youth Theatre and the New Wimbledon Theatre Youth Theatre, worked as Festival Assistant on the STEP Festival, assistant directed a production of Macbeth with Action Theatre at Westminster Cathedral Choir School, and assistant directed the Unicorn Tehatre's Summer Youth Theatre production of Anasi and the Sky God. I cover teach the Yvonne Arnaud Youth Theatre and worked as a Drama Facilitator for Big Foot Theatre CompanyI. I also set up 'Exit Smiling' with co-director Saraid Dodd.

Exit Smiling delivers drama workshops for children during the school holidays that are inspired by a piece of fiction, be that a play, novel, poem, or piece of visual art. This stimulus is then explored through drama games, improvisation, music, and art.

We encourage young people to work both collaboratively and individually, releasing their creativity by provoking spontaneous responses to stories, music and art. We aim to develop young people’s understanding of and respect for theatre as an art form.

Exit Smiling have delivered projects at theatres including Richmond Theatre and Wimbledon Theatre and Oval House Theatre. Projects range from themed holiday workshops to education projects for students with special needsd to compliment productions.

I curently work full time at a Specialist Status Performing Arts school, Esher High School, as Performing Arts Coordinator.
