Please note that the Young Vic Directors Program is open to all directors at an early stage of their career. The only criteria for joining is that they consider themselves professional directors, are not in full time education and are resident in the UK. It is important that when using this list detailed references are taken up as presence on this list is not in itself a recommendation.

background: From 2007 onwards I have been operating as the artistic director of The Humble Theatre Company (www.humbletheatre.com), my own production company which specializes in thought provoking theatre. Since the company formed we have produced 10 shows on the London Fringe, the Edinburgh Fringe and in the West End, many of which have used the moving image alongside live performance. Prior to this I worked freelance as a director, choreographer, writer, producer and performer gaining the experience of working in some of the finest auditoria in England including The Royal Albert Hall, The Hammersmith Apollo and Wembley Conference Centre. In 2006 I was commissioned to write and direct the first live theatrical performance in 80 years for the famous Coronet Cinema in Notting Hill which would juxtapose moving image with live performance, and later in 2008 I directed a short film for a screening there also.Last logged in 4/8/2010
Shows I have recently directed have been focused on social topics such as Islamism in the UK, sex-trafficking, modern discrimination and abortion, having a number of positive reviews in the press:
'Riveting, ringside stuff' (Time Out); 'The treatment is handled with depth and very believable emotion' (The Stage); 'Shocking, provoking, daring to ask questions' (Scotsfestival).
Time Out 'This company [is] a genuinely exciting new prospect'
I often use the moving image in my productions which has led me to further study in this area, and this year I commenced an MA by research entitled 'The Big Screen Centre Stage: the use of moving image in modern theatre'.
I trained in Musical Theatre at Italia Conti.

background: I have worked as a director in London fringe venues for the last 4 years, primarily for In Company Theatre and Large Print Theatre. Additionally, I teach at the Actor Works Drama School where I am responsible for directing 1 student production per term. Prior to this experience, I ran my own theatre company (Electric Sheep Perfromance) in York for 5 years directing several shows in non-traditional theatre environments as well as in traditional spaces. Additionally, I teach to Sixth Form Performing Arts students.Last logged in 6/9/2010
My interest in directing theatre was awoken during my training at Bretton Hall College. I try to make bold, visually arresting, potent, lyrical, sensitive and entertaining theatre. Whilst I have been, and can be 'experimental' or use 'non-traditional' forms I am very much more interested in making theatre that seeks to 'wake us up' by using vivid storytelling and strong performances in service of the writers' work. In some regards I think I'm a bit of a traditionalist, really. I love to do the classics, from ancient to contemporary. I am also passionate about supporting emerging artists and new writing; I find devised work to be deeply exciting and rewarding.
I believe strongly in the collaborative nature of theatre. I try to place a strong emphasis on 'company' in my work and I believe the creative process to be a wholly intuitive one. Yes, there is certainly a time and place and a necessity for analysis: the theoretical, the practical and the critical, but not in the heat of discovery in rehearsal. A rehearsal is all about relationships, about being in the room together with other people, working towards something. In my role, as director, I endeavour to function as the perfect witness, supporting the actors (and other artists) efforts with sustained, focussed and creative attention.
