The Directors

Please note that the Young Vic Directors Program is open to all directors at an early stage of their career. The only criteria for joining is that they consider themselves professional directors, are not in full time education and are resident in the UK. It is important that when using this list detailed references are taken up as presence on this list is not in itself a recommendation.

    Gillian Foley - Photo
background: I am fascinated by the exploration of transferring real life to the stage through text, observation and physicality. Since studying at such diverse institutions as Dartington College of Arts, RADA and the Ecole International du Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. This exposure to three different ways of approaching the arts has allowed me to explore the world of theatre for myself and discover where my talent and passion lies. This is namely in the transferral of life to stage, whether through devising, tackling new writing or re-inventing existing work. I have been part of Transeuropa and the Baltic Circle Festival, both of which focus on new European works. My involvement in London’s fringe has ranged from a liberal interpretation of Kaspar by Peter Handke to directing and collaborating with new comedy writer Sarah Henley. Most recently, I have collaborated with Israeli performer Adi Lerer on a devised work based around her childhood experiences. This was shown at the Camden Roundhouse Studio as part of the Camden Fringe Festival in August of this year. I am currently in development with Sarah. The piece will be performed in April 2010
