The Directors

Please note that the Young Vic Directors Program is open to all directors at an early stage of their career. The only criteria for joining is that they consider themselves professional directors, are not in full time education and are resident in the UK. It is important that when using this list detailed references are taken up as presence on this list is not in itself a recommendation.

background: I am a director and facilitator, currently working with several theatre collectives, including Icarus Theatre Collective and Lab Theatre Collective. I recently took a training course with Katie Mitchell in directing and continue to take workshops and training courses to improve my skills. Most recently, I have worked on Meisner and Laban techniques in this context.

I am currently in the research and development stage of a site specifc production and also working towards a performance installation called Unseen at the V & A as part of their Small Spaces exhibition in July.

I am particularly interested in new writing and site specific theatre, and regularly help develop and workshop scritps with writers.

background: I have a BA in Theatre & English (1997), a postgraduate diploma from LAMDA's Directors Course (2006), and an MA in Arts Policy & Management from Birkbeck College (2008) - in the US, I have assisted Bartlett Sher, David Wheeler, and Karin Coonrod among others. In the UK I have assisted Helena Kaut-Howson and Stephen Unwin professionally and Peter James, Penny Cherns, Colin Cook, and Stephen Jameson while at LAMDA. I have experience devising work with young people and have also been an actress and stage hand. I currently work at the Bush Theatre as Development Officer.

My most recent directing/producing work is the Nola Project. A cross-cultural devised piece which involves a British playwright (Roland Smith), two British actors, and a group of disadvantaged children from New Orleans - by using forum theatre, we will create a new play which tells the story of growing up in a economically and environmentally challenged city in time for the 5-year anniversay of Katrina. The Nola Project will be produced in the name of my budding company, BeesKnees Productions.

  22. Biba West*
    Biba West - Photo
background: My 2010 project for my theatre company, The Boudoir Noir, is a triple-bill of apparently unperformable plays by Gertrude Stein, but I assure you they will become overperformable plays.

Talking of which, one of my last productions was Caryl Churchill's 'This is a Chair'.

'Biba Lille-West directs Caryl Churchill's sketch-y creation with imagination, deconstructing the boundaries of performance and playing on the audience's uncertainty...a disconcerting, unfinished, but absorbing play.' The Stage

I love any opportunity to give birth to productions of unwieldy, unperformable texts simply because it's always about challenging ways of seeing, and what theatre can be. Female empowerment features strongly in my work and how I go about it.

I did an MA in directing at Middlesex University. I was inspired to create theatre as a teenager by the idiosyncratic dance practitioners of the 1980s like Michael Clark, Lea Anderson, Matthew Bourne and Laurie Booth. I started directing in the 90s, taking original work/adaptations of classics across the UK and Europe. I then did an MA in theatre directing to broaden my scope.

I've also worked in new writing, and in opera as assistant director at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Bath Theatre Royal and the English Haydn Festival in Bridgnorth; plus as director of 'The Vienna Show' at the Bush Hall.

For nearly 20 years I was, and am still occasionally, a working actor - so I am excellent at guiding actors to a good performance. In my twenties I was also a semi-professional contemporary dancer and now aged 40 I have naturally become a semi-professional swing dancer! Never say never! Jazz, Lindy Hop and other dances from the 1920s to the 1950s. What I can provide you with is rigour, energy, dedication, detail, lust for life and complete contempt for ageism!
