Launched in 2000 with the arrival of David Lan as Young Vic artistic director, the Directors Program is the only scheme of its kind in the UK.  It provides positive and proactive support for young directors by offering a range of opportunities to help them develop their craft.

Since 2003 the Genesis Foundation has made a substantial commitment to the Director’s Program and their support currently focuses on the Genesis Directors Network and the Genesis Fellowship.

In 2009 we re-assessed the opportunities we can offer, and the project has four focuses:

  • The Genesis Directors Network
  • Skills
  • Jerwood Assistant Director Program
  • Special Projects

More detailed information on each of these areas can be found on individual pages.

The Directors Program is open to young professional directors at the early stages of their career (defined in terms of experience rather than age).

We receive many inquiries from young directors who have ideas and plays they would like to develop as productions. Realistically, however, our resources will never be able to meet that demand, though we are always keen to receive exciting ideas when we are recruiting for our special projects and residencies.

The Genesis Directors Network is supported by the Genesis Foundation and the Jerwood Assistant Director Program is funded by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

Please note that all opportunities to assist on productions, placements and internships are organised through the Directors Program.  We are unable to accept separate correspondence regarding these areas of activity.
